Emma in Bequia, half way around the world

Emma in Bequia, taking a break from sailing halfway round the world …

ABOUT Emma

Emma is an artist from Kent, UK. She is also a sailor who lives and paints aboard a boat, sailing with her husband.

The boat in question is ‘Cesarina’ - a Sparkman & Stephens yawl built by Nautor Swan in 1971. She has a story all of her own and you can see photos of her - and how Emma manages to paint onboard - here.

Emma is a graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford University. She has been selling her artwork since she was a teenager, making pocket money from miniature watercolours of Kent tourist attractions.

She is also a competent bluewater sailor with now over 45,000 sea miles to her name, including 5 Atlantic crossings and one double-handed Pacific Ocean crossing with the man she met in Colombia, now her husband.

Emma uses wholly traditional techniques and the highest quality pigments to create detailed and finely crafted oil paintings. Her inspiration is often the wide open spaces of the ocean and the intricacy of coastal spaces.

“I try to gather up the light and the space of the view, the ocean, the wild spaces, into my heart and then release it onto the canvas. For me, art represents the opportunity to bring a space for reflection into a person’s home, into their life. Paintings have the ability to provoke thought and to bring solace. I use the colour of peace - a beautiful blue - in almost all my work, and I hope that it brings clarity and a quiet mind to the viewer.”

She believes in the pleasure of a beautiful piece of art and that the fundamental duty of a good work of art is to enhance the space you place it in, to elevate that space and to make it special.

Emma often paints en plein air, coaxing locations onto the canvas. She also takes commissions - for portraits, boats, events or special places - and offers a range of prints.
