This beach is packed on Bank Holidays and sunny weekends. Half of London usually spills colourfully out of the train and turns right to the Main Sands. Women in burkas paddle, Caribbean music fills the air and orthodox Jews sit fully dressed in the blazing sunshine. Half-naked men with tattoos and beer cans and sunburn stalk the promenade.

Lockdown meant an empty beach over Easter, even though the weather was beautiful.
