Shoal 1: Into the Deep 40cm Limited Edition print

£85.00

This painting was always very special to me as it represented the beginning of a long slow change of career for me. It is therefore completely appropriate that, in the week that I announce that I am launching myself wholeheartedly into being a full time artist and sailor, that this should be the first Limited Edition print that I release.

This is the beginning of something really special and I am so thrilled that you are here to share it.

This beautiful giclee print, on 305gsm slightly textured cotton-based archival paper, is made using archival inks. I have had only 20 prints made and I have signed and numbered every one. I will not be repeating this print run.

The print itself measures 30cm square and the paper is cut to 40cm so that there is a good margin for whatever kind of frame or mount you choose. Each print will be carefully rolled and wrapped and sent to you in a very safe tube with a sheet explaining the story behind the painting. This will protect the print in transit to you. Delivery will be via courier. If you live in the UK, postage and packaging will be £7.50 and if you live anywhere else in the world it will be a little more expensive at £15.00

Please call or email me if you have any questions or queries.

This piece holds a special place in my heart for all the experiences and dreams it represents.

20 Limited Edition beautiful prints of it have been made and this is the only time I will print this.

Let me tell you about it:

This painting is inspired by one particular evening in the Caribbean, a long time ago now, on board a catamaran belonging to some good friends of my then partner.

One evening, at anchor off the island of Grenada, we'd had a delicious supper (some fish we'd caught that day) and we'd drunk a fair amount of... everything, probably, but mostly rum as I recall. It was dark and quite late and I was sitting on the transom, talking with Phil (our friend) about what fish do at night.

I have dreamed many times since about what came next.
It was the work of a magician.
"Wait," he said.

Phil has this car headlight in a waterproof casing which he fetched and he dangled it off the transom in the super clear water. It created a light sabre, a tunnel of light into the dark water below us.

”Wait," he said.

From the blackness, first the little fishes came. Slowly, they began to circle just below the light, then below them came the bigger ones. After a while, I don't know how long, bigger fish starting circling beneath and bigger still, deep into the darker depths.
It was utterly mesmerising.

Every so often, the smaller fish nearer the light packed themselves together in a tighter shoal as they noticed one of the predators below them, but soon they all relaxed again into their mesmeric circular swim below me.
I could have just sat there all night and watched them ...
