Warm Front Approaching (Minnis Bay)
If you look closely, you can see the Reculver Towers on a distant headland. They have stood since 597AD, serving as a landmark for shipping and a deterrent to invaders. They are visible for miles and miles.
When the weather starts to get a bit misty and there are cirrus clouds up high, you know there is a warm front coming. Warm fronts mean rain, sometimes storms.
I loved painting this enormous piece. It is incredibly imposing and there is an element of trompe l’oeil about it, as if you could also cycle into this view - just like I did.
It took me a long time, painting in my apartment overlooking the sea in Margate. The skies there are extraordinarily beautiful - JMW Turner was on to something when he moved there.
It is a stunning piece - a real conversation starter.
